From DIY to Deconstruction: Rethos Takes Sustainability to the Next Level

We have some big news to share about our DIY classes at Rethos. After much consideration, we’ve decided to take a pause on offering these classes in 2025 and 2026. This wasn’t an easy decision because we know how much our DIY community loves learning hands-on skills and tackling creative projects. However, we have a truly exciting opportunity on the horizon—and we need to focus our time and energy on bringing it to life.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Rethos will be launching a brand-new program called the Deconstruction Academy. This initiative will teach sustainable building practices, with a focus on carefully dismantling structures to preserve materials for reuse. It’s an innovative way to combine preservation with environmental sustainability, and we can’t wait to get started. Since our staff capacity is limited, this means stepping back from DIY classes for a little while so we can dedicate ourselves fully to making the Deconstruction Academy a success.

Natalie Heneghan

As we announce this change, we want to take a moment to thank Natalie Heneghan, who brought the DIY classes to life. Natalie’s creativity, dedication, and expertise laid the foundation for what became one of our most beloved programs. Since 2016, our DIY classes have taught 118 hands one workshops to 2068 enthusiastic students. From repairing windows to learning woodworking basics, these classes have empowered so many people to take preservation into their own hands. Natalie’s work has left a lasting legacy, and we’re so grateful for her contributions to Rethos.

While our DIY classes are on hold, we hope you’ll check out some of the other exciting educational opportunities we’re offering. Our “Drinking in History” speaker series features fascinating discussions on preservation, history, and community—perfect for lifelong learners. We’re also continuing to offer our Realtor classes, which are available at a lower cost for those who don’t need continuing education credits. Once the Deconstruction Academy is up and running, its classes will also be accessible to the public at affordable rates. There’s a lot to look forward to!

For those who love hands-on learning, we highly recommend the Minnesota Tool Library. This incredible nonprofit provides access to tools, training, and workspace at an affordable price. Their classes cover a wide range of topics, from home repair basics to auto maintenance, and they’re perfect for both beginners and seasoned DIYers. With locations in Northeast Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Minnesota Tool Library is a wonderful resource to keep your DIY skills sharp.

We know this change might be disappointing for some of you, and we truly appreciate your understanding. We’re confident that the Deconstruction Academy will open up new opportunities to learn and grow—just like our DIY classes have done over the years. Thank you for being part of the Rethos community and for supporting us as we continue to reimagine and preserve the places we love.

Stay tuned for updates about the Deconstruction Academy and all the exciting things ahead. We can’t wait to share this new chapter with you!
